History:
Established in 1686, Snow Hill is named for a district in London. In 1694, the town was designated a royal port by William and Mary of England. When the Houses of Assembly created Worcester County in 1742, by taking a part of Sussex County, Snow Hill was made the County Seat.
Goods came through the thriving port and rich ship captains built their homes here. Steamboats drove the engine that made this the place to be and to be seen. The port provided transportation for passengers to the western shore which made Snow Hill grow and prosper.
Snow Hill stands along the banks of the wild and scenic Pocomoke River, one of Maryland's most beautiful waterways, and is home to over 100 houses over 100 years-old.
Despite a disastrous fire in 1893 destroying downtown, several pre-Revolutionary War structures remain and are carefully preserved and maintained. |
