Lifeguards Drop From 92 to 40 Along The Beach

The annual exodus of lifeguards from Ocean City beaches start this week because of early college start dates. Lifeguard stands that currently number 92 will drop to 40 in September. Ocean City Beach Patrol Captain, Butch Arbin, says swimmers will not be at risk. But one has to wonder if the distance between stands won't put a strain on the Beach Patrol, especially during the week when the fewest lifeguards are available.

It is always safer to walk down the beach to be in an area near a lifeguard stand. Rip tides are hard for the casual swimmer to judge and even harder to escape. If traveling down the beach is not an option you should try to swim near surf beaches, surfers generally know the currents and are more than willing to help a swimmer that gets into trouble or give advice on swimming conditions, if asked. Don't be afraid to ask a surfer for advice, they are usually very informative and will probably keep an eye out for your safety once you have talked to them. If neither of these options are available than be very safety cautious. I personally watch other swimmers before I enter the water to see if there are any areas that seem to be causing problems and I always keep an eye on members of my party that aren't strong swimmers. Never get lost in conversation or a book while small children are in the water or playing along the surf.

Enjoy your stay in Ocean City!
