The city of Berlin was founded in the 1790's around the Burley Plantation, which was formed from a land grant in 1677. Assateague Indians and the neighboring Pocomoke tribe used what is now Main Street as the path between the tribes. The boom years for Berlin were in the early 1900's when travelers would stop here for a rest. At that time Berlin offered more rooms for rent than Ocean City.
The town has 47 buildings listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Thanks to a revitalization project started in the 1980's, in which both government and the private sector worked together, Berlin now has a thriving commercial district. Anchored by the Atlantic Hotel, Main Street has numerous antique and gift shops. The Atlantic Hotel is a Victorian structure, with 17 guest rooms, that was built in 1895.
Located 7 miles from Ocean City, Maryland and 9 miles from Assateague Island National Seashore, Berlin offers a quiet lifestyle with affordable housing that is close to major employment and recreation areas. |
